Secret watermarks?

Jess sent me this link this morning that basically says that since 2008 Blizzard has been putting a secret watermark on all of our screenshots that includes our user IDs, the time the screenshot was captured and the IP address of the server we were on at the time.

We know how technologically inept I am, so this is beyond me, but it sounds crazy. Another link to a forum discussion around this.

Comments on both sites include obvious concerns around privacy and hacking.

Hmmmm. Any folks more technologically advanced than I (which would be um, all of you) have thoughts around this?

  1. I think everyone is too busy processing your screen shots from your blog to find your watermark.

  2. @Jess: Hey, stay out of my watermark!

  3. I did some further investigation into my screenshots. Here's what I found in my watermark:

    Damn pallies and f'in archaeology.

  4. It's a hoax. You can generate similar patterns if you follow their procedure, but the patterns change depending on what your screen capture settings are. And if they're at highest quality, the patterns completely disappear. They're just an artifact of the compression algorithm, distorted all to hell by extreme photo enhancing.

  5. Oi, you're like a pitbull when it comes to those two topics, K. Good thing I am a shammy now... oh wait. You mentioned me specifically earlier.

  6. You're going to figure out how to decode your screens yourself, K, and you'll enhance them and zoom in and find a barely visible image of a paladin pointing and laughing.

  7. @Ratters: Good to know!

Seriously Rades... pallys are hiding in my screenshots mocking me with one hand all whist clutching their Tyrande's Dolls in the other.
